Cleaning Your Fish Tank in 10 Easy Steps

As a responsible pet owner, it’s your job to keep your fish tank crystal clear at all times. It will keep your beautiful fish healthy and it will add to the overall interior design of your home. It isn’t a difficult task, so if you’re new to owning fish, all you need to do is follow my instructions below and you’ll easily be able to keep your fish healthy and happy.

1. This first thing that you should do is unplug all of the electrical parts of your fish tank. Everything from the filter to the lights to the water heater. Anything electrical that is connected to the fish tank should be unplugged.
2. Next you will need to remove the top of the tank. Wipe it down with a damp paper towel or a clean rag.
3. Then remove enough water from the tank, so that you can temporarily house your fish during the cleaning process. Place the water into a bowl or small container. Then carefully scoop your fish out one at a time using a fish net.
4. Once the tank is completely free of fish, thoroughly scrub the inside of the tank walls with an algae scrub pad.
5. Now remove anything from the tank that appears to be soiled or dirty. Everything from rocks to decoration. Clean and scrub them in your sink using a scrub pad. Make sure to rinse them thoroughly. Then let them dry completely.
6. Next it’s time to siphon out water from the tank. If the tank appears to be incredibly dirty, you may want to remove up seventy-five percent of the water. But if it isn’t overly soiled, you should only need to remove about fifty percent.
7. Discard the old filter media then remove the filter and clean in tap water.
8. Using a bucket, refill the tank with clean water then add chlorine to the water. The amount and type should depend on your fish, so make sure to ask at the pet store if you are uncertain.
9. Now replace the rocks and decoration that you removed to clean. Also replace the filter and new filter media. Turn the filter on and allow it to run for about an hour before placing your fish back into the tank.
10. Replace your fish and that’s it!

Your fish deserve the best, so make sure that they always have clean and high quality fish tanks.
